What brand owners should know about domain name protection in China

12:00-1:45pm. China’s Internet usage continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. The number of people connected to the Internet is estimated to reach 721 million in July this year. This represents a 52% penetration rate among China’s population. China also plays an active and important role in the development of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs), and it is reported that more than 53% of all new gTLDs are registered to domain name holders in China.

Registering and protecting Chinese domain names is attracting increasing attention from brand holders. It is therefore extremely useful for trademark owners and IP practitioners to be up-to-date with the regulatory framework and recent developments in the domain name space in China, so as to be able to develop and implement effective domain name protection strategies as part of their wider brand strategy.
