The first China-US Intellectual Property Forum, co-organised by the International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property (IAPIP) and the US-China Legal Exchange Foundation (UCLEF), was held on 23 May at the historic Harvard Club in New York.

In 2018, trade disputes arose between China and the United States, and intellectual property protection was an important element of China-US trade negotiations. To promote communication and understanding of the latest legislative enforcement of intellectual property protection between China and the United States, learn from each other’s specific experience and legal practice in intellectual property protection, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation in intellectual property protection between China and the United States, and give full play to the role of intellectual property rights as a bridge in innovation cooperation between the two countries, the International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property and the US-China Legal Exchange Foundation held the China-US Intellectual Property Forum on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States in 2019. And invited Chinese and American intellectual property experts to discuss the hot topic of protection of intellectual property rights of the two countries.

The faculty of speakers of the Forum comprise Dr. Xing Jijun, Scientific Counselor of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, Professor Zhang Chu, President of the International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property, and representatives of Chinese and American governments, intellectual property lawyers, and representatives of well-known enterprises.

Mr.Cai Weiping, President of the Policy and Compliance Department of Internet DotTrademark Organisation (IDTO) delivered a keynote speech on trademark protection in the Internet era at the Forum, and exchanged views with top intellectual property experts at home and abroad.

In his speech, Mr.Cai Weiping first introduced the challenges and existing problems of trademark rights protection on various Internet platforms appearing in China, which aroused the attention and heated discussion of the guests. Mr.Cai pointed out that the regional trademark registration system and the adoption of the “First to File” principle in most regions has led to the frequent occurrence of “trademark squatting” in many regions of the world, especially in China. At the same time, Internet applications have the characteristics of cross-regional and rapid dissemination, which makes the effective application and protection of trademarks in the Internet era is complex and variable. DotTrademark “.商标“ is an intellectual property project of great significance in the new era, providing a new solution of  trademark application on the Internet by innovating trademark protection mechanism to enable consumers to quickly and accurately identify genuine services and products on the Internet.

Mr.Dennis Cai proposed that brand owners must first have the awareness of enhancing the protection and security application of trademark rights on the Internet. In addition, it is necessary to implement a two-handed strategy. On the one hand, in the event of a violation of trademark rights, it is necessary to actively defend rights through various effective legal channels; on the other hand, it is necessary to place great emphasis on the registration and use of DotTrademark domain names that are friendly to trademark rights.
